According to Wikipedia "Poverty is general scarcity, dearth, or the
state of one who lacks a certain amount of material possessions or
money. It is a multifaceted concept, which includes social, economic,
and political elements."
Suresh Tendulkar panel's recommendations in 2011-12, the poverty line had been fixed at Rs 27 in rural areas and Rs 33 in urban areas, which means a person earning 27 rupee in a rural location is poor and a person living in urban location , who is earning rupee 33 is also considered as poor.
Lets, just don't talk about how may people are living below poverty line (BPL), as we all know there is around 30% of population in BPL category. But here, you should know about income based poverty.
The poverty line was originally fixed in terms of income/food requirements in 1978. It was stipulated that the calorie standard for a typical individual in rural areas was 2400 calorie and was 2100 calorie in urban areas. Then the cost of the grains (about 650 gms) that fulfil this normative standard was calculated. This cost was the poverty line. In 1978, it was Rs.61.80 per person per month for rural areas and Rs.71.30 for urban areas. Since then the Planning Commission calculates the poverty line every year adjusting for inflation. The poverty line in recent years is as follows – (Rs. per month per head)
This income is bare minimum to support the food requirements and does not provide much for the other basic essential items like health, education etc. That is why some times the poverty lines have been described as starvation lines
Do you think, Poverty can ever be Eradicated , well, this is a tough question to answer, what i think , You certainly can eliminate poverty but as long as you are raising standards for poverty line you can not eliminate it. you can only eliminate poverty by strengthening the bottom of the pyramid. most of us fail to understand the significance of bottom of pyramid. we should understand that the bottom of anything is basically its foundation and as long as your foundation is not strong, building wont come as strong . My view is you should really empower poor people .but all of us know its not an easy task to empower them specially in a country like INDIA.
You can strengthen the poor people by educating them but only education is not necessary but we also need to know if application of that education is being done or not. what happens in Indian scenario, we aim to educate every single person but that not happening my brother. because our system is faulty we provide education to poor people but we don't provide them enough chances to apply that information anywhere. which makes poor people think that education is a waste of money and time. though now a days prime minister of India is aiming to provide more chance of employment to everyone with the schemes such as Make in India and Digital India. but most of Indians are not getting the benefits of these schemes.. as of now we can only say...

"Standards of poverty has been raised but, not the standard of people living in poverty"
